 On December 12th, 2009 more than 500 community members came to the Sacramento Native American Health Center’s (SNAHC) Community WinterBanquet. As with years before, this years banquet included a great meal, traditional musicians, and a raffle. Native Voices is an initiative of California Voices designed to train young people using new methods for cultural documentation, to preserve Native beliefs, language, and values, and to share the perspectives and contributions of local Native elders.Featured stories included -

- I’ve Done Your Time – There are nearly 1,000 validated gang members in the City of Sacramento that are under the age of 18. Trino Savala spent years as a prison gang member and now teaches youth how to avoid the gang life that almost destroyed him.
- American Indian Dropout – The dropout rate for American Indian students in California is nearly 22% higher than average.Students interviewed community members to explore reasons for this epidemic and figure out what can be done to stop it.
- Mixed Natives – What is it like to live your life straddling the fence between 2, 3 or even 4 ethnic groups?What is it like to have people doubt your ancestry because you don’t “look the part”? Community members speak out about what its like to be a “Mixed Native”.
