The Center for Multicultural Cooperation is currently fundraising and recruiting for the 2nd Annual UC Promoters Technology and Leadership Institute. The goal of the Institute is to bring first generation high school students from the Central Valley to the UC campus for one week in June, where they will be:

• Provided with outreach materials and contact with counselors while immersed in the university setting
• Exposed to new, innovative uses of technology to impact the community by the Global Information Internship Program (GIIP)
• Guided in the production of a digital video about college admissions, financial aid resources, and student support after enrollment, to be shared in schools and throughout the community upon return.

In June 2007, one dozen young people from the Fresno metropolitan area travelled to U.C. Santa Cruz to take part in the 1st Annual UC Promoters Technology and Leadership Institute. Students became engaged in the university experience by sleeping in the dormitories, eating in the dining hall, working in the University computer lab, and learning and interacting with university staff and students. Students gained a detailed understanding of the process of applying for college and funding their education, through sessions with U.C. representatives from the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices. These students returned to Fresno, where they became the leaders and Executive Youth Producers of the Summer of Service, which rallied youth throughout the city to volunteer at community center computer labs to document the stories of elders who have made significant contributions to culture, community, and country.

Contact the Center for Multicultural Cooperation if you are interested in participating in the 2nd Annual UC Promoters Technology and Leadership Institute, or can help to make this initiative possible for a greater number of students this summer!
